Skill development - peeling a raw egg without damaging the delicate membrane - may seem a million miles from the surgical act of lifting the sinus lining. Not so - as it teaches tactile feedback, dexterity, and control.
Management of the posterior maxilla invariably involves encounters with the maxillary sinuses. Avoidance or manipulation cannot be escaped. This day was dedicated to the posterior maxilla. Interactive sessions addressed the assessment of this region using 3D-imaging to identify the availability of bone as well as hazards, such as septa and pathology.
The avoidance of complications by appropriate surgical technique was emphasized within the context of the vastly varying data reported in the literature. Furthermore a session was devoted to complications and their management.
The day also included presentations by participants seeking guidance and offering solutions to a variety of clinical situations, particularly related to the maxillary sinus. This approach is especially effective in pinpointing clinical issues and providing understanding and potential solutions.
