Why should I attend this course?
The aim of this course is to teach you to practice implant dentistry safely, predictably and effectively. It is also the aim of the Academy to support participants to attain a recognisable formal qualification in addition to the detailed e-CPD that is provided.

What is different about this course?
This course is designed to make you competent in implant dentistry. It is not constrained by bureaucratic regulations. It is a hands-on how to do it well type of course.

What is the structure of this course?
The course will consist of 12 modules, which will normally be held on a Friday and a Saturday. Each module will be 2 days some modules will be three days when additional clinical activity has been planned.
In addition, on a Thursday prior to each Module (Friday and Saturday) clinical demonstrations are carried out as well as treatment of patients by the course participants under the guidance of the directors.
An additional day is provided once a week for clinical training (mentoring) of participants who will treat patients for all aspects of implant dentistry.
All clinical cases involve recruitment, assessment and treatment planning, consent and surgical as well as restorative phases of treatment. Monitoring is also carried out by the course participants.
To facilitate this, a free Simplant licence is provided for all participants during the duration of this course.

Do I need any qualifications?
You need a dental degree (BDS or equivalent)
You can attend all hands-on training sessions and lectures if you are a licensed dentist.
However, if you wish to treat patients at our training centre you also need the following:
You need to be registered with the GDC
You need to have indemnity cover with any of the UK-based organisations.

Will I treat patients on this course?
Yes you will be able to treat patients at our training facility provided that you are GDC registered in the UK.
You will carry out the treatment planning, surgical and the restorative phases for each patient you treat.
You will also have an opportunity to do treatment planning for patients that are being treated by your fellow course participants.

How many patients will I treat?
We are planning that you will treat approximately 10 patients during the course.

Where will I find patients?
You will find patients within your practice. We shall have a module early on to train you for the recruitment of patients.

Will patients be provided?
A limited number of patients will be provided, but you will need to assess these patients under supervision and carry out the treatment including the follow-up and monitoring. You will not earn money for treating these patients.

How will I gain and develop clinical skills?
You will observe patients being treated, carry out treatment under supervision and, when confident, treat patients unsupervised. However you will also have access to the clinical faculty for guidance.

Will I be protected against litigation?
You will work under your own indemnity cover. You will be guided by a qualified and experienced implant surgeon. The process that you follow will be robust.
You will also be following training standard guidelines which the GDC have adopted.
Your supervising clinician will have his own indemnity cover.

How will I learn to assess whether patients are suitable for treatment?
You will learn how to assess patients using the most modern and effective methodology. You will be given (free of charge) a licence to use the interactive software for the treatment of your patients. (

You will also have technical support to provide you with laboratory artefacts such as study casts and templates.

Will I develop surgical skills?
You will carry out each surgical procedure on animal models to develop your surgical skills.

Will I develop skills in restorative dentistry?
There are a number of practical exercises such as impression taking that you will carry out.

Is this a systems based course?
This course will focus on implant features. This is what matters when you are carrying out treatment. The focus will be to understand how the body responds to each of the implant components that you are going to use.

What are the time commitments?
12 weekends (usually Fridays and Saturdays).

What additional time will I need to set aside?
In addition to the modules you will be treating patients in your own practice and at our training facility in Yorkshire.

What qualification will I get?
You will get verifiable CPD.
You will get a certificate from the PID – Academy accurately specifying the training you have completed.
For candidates who wish to have a formal external qualification PID will encourage candidates to sit the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh –
DipImpDent RCS Edinburgh.
You will be registered for the examination and will need to comply with the
regulations.

Is PID-Academy affiliated with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh?
No, PID-Academy is not affiliated with the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. The Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh does not accredit or approve courses. However our course is based on the GDC training standard in implant dentistry and therefore a thorough preparation to sit the Diploma in Implant Dentistry at the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh. Am I sure to get the diploma from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh?
No. But:
You Will have covered the curriculum,
You will have been guided through clinical cases along with the documentation required.
You will be exposed to objective structured clinical reasoning in preparation for the OSCE.

Will all the modules be at the ACE in Wakefield?
At least one module will be held at a different venue (Surgical Skills and Simulation Centre).
Additional clinical sessions will be held at the teaching and academic faculty’s premises.

What is the cost of sitting the examination in Edinburgh?
The costs for the exam can be found on the website of the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh and was £2,000 in 2017 if taken in Edinburgh.

Why is PID-Academy encouraging to sit an external examination at a non-affiliated Institute (RCS Edinburgh)?
PID encourages participants to obtain a formal qualification to demonstrate their competence to practice implant dentistry. The safety of patients is of utmost importance and PID- The Academy - aims to develop the skills of participants to be able to achieve predictable, effective and safe dental implant treatment. A formal independent external qualification is considered an important stepping stone towards achieving this goal.

What are the financial arrangements for the management of patients?
This will depend upon who has provided the patient.
For patients you provide and treat at the training facility, you will charge the patients and pay a proportion to the PID–Academy.
For the patients that you treat at your own practice – you will keep those fees.

What are the financial arrangements if I treat patients under guidance elsewhere?
If patients are treated elsewhere separate arrangements will apply. Some examples are listed:
If the patient is treated at your practice and you require guidance from a supervising clinician, separate arrangements will be made according to our guidelines.
If a patient is treated at the practice of the supervising clinician under his guidance fees will be charged and apportioned according to guidelines.

Will I incur any additional costs?
You will be responsible for purchasing any equipment, including implant kits and surgical instruments. In addition you will be responsible for your travel and subsistence.
