The legendary John Cawood.
The man who brought science to the classification of the jaws, which is adopted by most of the government bodies.
PID-Academy was privileged to have John Cawood speaking to the participants during one of the modules as part of the dental implant training programme in Leeds Wakefield, UK. John, the recipient of King James IV professorship from the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh, presented an overview of the management of patients compromised by severe atrophy of the jaws to those with failing dentitions.
His classification provides an excellent mechanism of communication of the degree of atrophy (1). This in turn allows the clinicians to be able to prescribe reconstructive treatment deemed suitable for each degree of atrophy.
Excellent examples of patient treatments for the variety of patients seen in a dental practice were presented based on his classification. This was a very valuable presentation underpinning the need for safe treatment by recognizing the risks associated with each of the classes.
The participants of the Practical Implant Dentistry (PID) training programme gained insight into treatment options for patients. These obviously ranged from basic treatments, which could easily be undertaken according to the GDC training standards document, to advanced reconstructive procedures requiring an interdisciplinary approach.
